The Territory
Situated
on the North-East margin 9f the Fucino river bed, wide and rich plateau
in the heart of Abruzzo, enclosed between the highest tops in the central
Apeninnes (M. Velino m. 2487; Gran Sasso m. 2914; Maiella m. 2795),
stands out the hill of Alba Fucens.
This relief goes up very gently from the Fucino plateau 710 m. high
to the highest peak 1032 m. high, where we can today see the ruins of
the medieval village of Albe and of Orsinis’ Castle. Beside this
peak, the hill has other two tops: St. Peter Hill (m. 1000) in the South
and the Pettorino (m.995) in the East. These three peaks represent a
natural barrier defending the plateau situated in the middle: the Plain
of Civita, a valley 100 m. wide. These natural conditions supported
the presence of the human civilities, that inhabited and inhabit, still
today, the hill, also thanks to the rare beauty of the place. In the
north there’s the Mount Velino; from the hill of Alba you can
admire the Palentini Plans, the river Imele-Salto, the entrance of the
Roveto Valley, the Pace Fonte Capo La Maina, leading to the Rocche Plan,
and the pace of Forca caruso. We need some fancy to imagine the Lake
Fucino, now drained, giving a milder climate and a richer Mediterranean
flora covering hill, as the scholars told us, but ndisappeared today.
An other impotant element is the geographical position of Alba Fucens,
being at the midway between Tirre nean sea and Adriatic Sea, it can
be reached in 1 hour both from Rome both from Pescara, L’Aquila,
Teramo, Chieti and others. For this reason, in the past, Alba Fucens
was an important junction in trading and communication with Lazio, Molise,
Marche and Campania. Today, its inheritance has been given to Avezzano,
a thriving town, virtual economical-administrative chief town of Marsica,
situated in the South of the hill. Now Alba Fucens is a nice and quiet
village where beauty and past mystery join together.
